Sustainable Solutions for Today’s Water Challenges

Public water and wastewater utilities face numerous challenges in meeting customer demands with increasing limits on available water supplies and expanding restrictions on surface water quality. Apex Companies has provided hydrogeologic consulting services for dozens of water and wastewater utilities over the past 30 years.  

Our staff have been involved in planning, design, and permitting on award winning Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) facilities, the development of highly progressive integrated water management programs, and in the evaluation and development of water supply wells, aquifer storage and recovery wells, and deep injection wells.

Integrated Water Supply Planning/Management

Water resource challenges are becoming increasingly complex, and the most effective solutions will often involve multiple water sources and a diversity of supply and management strategies with custom solutions that are unique to a given location.   

Apex has significant experience in providing integrated water resource evaluations and sustainability planning to manage finite resources. We consider the integration of stormwater, surface water, groundwater, and reclaimed water sources a critical part to developing effective and sustainable short- and long-term water supply plans.  

A properly integrated planning effort will consider all potential water sources and management options in seeking the most effective combination of alternatives. A key to a successful water management program often involves coordination between public and private interests and a myriad of related stakeholders in the balanced consideration of resource availability, public acceptance, environmental impacts, system reliability, resulting water quality, long term sustainability, and cost.

Watershed Management

Watershed management requires a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve effective and often competing water management objectives. Surface and groundwater hydrology are tightly coupled, requiring an integrated approach for accurate and appropriate analysis and design. Groundwater is commonly used for public and agricultural water supplies, which can impact wetlands within the watershed. Drainage of urban and agricultural lands can result in degraded ecosystems and elevated levels of flooding. Apex considers all components of the water balance when conducting watershed management studies.  

Apex has significant experience in conducting watershed studies in a wide variety of landscapes, including heavily farmed areas. Apex staff have developed Comprehensive Watershed Management Plans (CWMP) and have been actively involved in assisting in the hydrologic design of recommended watershed management improvement measures.

COVID-19 National Emphasis Program Audits

On March 12, 2021, OSHA Issued Directive Number DIR 2021-01 (CPL-03) covering its National Emphasis Program (NEP) on COVID‑19. This NEP was developed following the Executive order issued by President Biden on January 21, 2021, outlining steps needed to protect workers from exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace. The goal of the program is to reduce or eliminate worker exposures to COVID-19 by targeting those industries with a high frequency of close contact.

Apex Companies provides a full service concrete and grout testing American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Accredited Laboratory located in Somerset, PA. At Apex Companies, we provide land surveys for residential, commercial, and industrial developments. Our expertise ranges from cutting-edge UAV (drone) surveying and 3D Modeling to traditional property boundary, construction stake-out and general location surveys.

In the absence of accurate land and title surveys, your development project can easily be derailed.

During the construction phase is no time to find out that boundary lines have been improperly plotted, or that easements and rights-of-way have not been accounted for correctly.

As important as precise mapping, ALTA/ACSM land title surveys are critical to assuring that no hidden issues will surface during land development, matters like undisclosed easements and rights-of-way that could even impact the value of your property.

Welcome to the future of surface surveying. Apex Companies offers topographic mapping and surveying services completed by an RTK-GPS Surveying Drone. The UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can complete surveying projects more efficiently and accurately compared to traditional methods.

How does it work?

Apex imports a base map to the drone with a defined area to cover. After importing the map, the required ground resolution and image overlap is specified. Then specialized software generates a full flight plan, calculating the drone's required altitude and projected flight plan.

After launch, the drone continuously analyzes data from the Inertial Measurement Unit and the on-board GPS. This allows control over every aspect of the flight. If necessary, the flight plan and landing point can be reprogrammed mid-flight.

What happens to the flight results?

After the flight is completed, the data collected will help create geo-referenced maps and models. In a short matter of time the photogrammetry software, used in conjunction with the photos from the flight, generates 2D orthomosaics, 3D point clouds, triangle models and Digital Elevation Models.

All data collected can then be exported to third-party software to add GIS data or for creating custom maps. Typically, Apex can deliver a final topographic map and orthophoto within one day; and in some cases, the same day.
